Video Tutorial:

This financial model will benefit anyone interested in a retail business startup. The model’s assumptions were specifically designed with a jewelry store in mind but wording/ categories are easily customizable to fit any other kind of retail business. Users can build a five-year business case, exploring different revenue scenarios.

A sensitivity logic structure allows users to build their base case; a financial overview tab includes two drop-downs which allows users to choose whether the model runs off of base, low, or high magnitudes. Two primary global variables, pricing of each tier and unit sales, are also customizable.

As stated, this model will work for numerous retail businesses. Revenue logic is dictated by main product categories, as well as by subcategories within those with corresponding costs of goods sold. Therefore, any retail business could input their unique specs/ assumptions and the template will give a good, relevant, overall financial picture of what the user would like to convey.

Assumptions include: average monthly unit sales (by year) for all sub categories, 3 pricing tiers per subcategory, COGS sections for each subcategory, start month for each subcategory, and ability to turn any subcategory on or off.

Users are able to visualize basic recurring expenses with an assumption page that allows for various running costs which can be entered by year or by starting month. A variable cost section is also included which equals a direct percentage of revenue. Default fields included are franchise fees, sales tax, and another cell for other variable costs.

A section was included to account for one-time expenses, such as expanded the jewelry or retail show with new equipment, a new showroom, or anything that happens after the start up period. These one-time expenses wont flow to EBITDA, but will to monthly net cash flow.

A business overview page is included which shows high-level financial information such as COGS, revenues, running costs, debt services, EBITDA, one-time expenses, and running cash position/ net cash flow.

Some other features included: visually appealing, 3D charts/ and visuals, tabs that include a break-even page (based on variable and fixed costs), a return page that compares non-leverage vs. leverage (including ROI, IRR, annualized ROI percentage and dollar, and break-even months), and a discounted cash flow valuation.
